Sussita (Hippos)

Nature Reserves

Sussita is an archaeological site in the Golan, on a hill above the Sea of Galilee.

The ancient city of Sussita stood here and served as a polis (city-state).

The mountain is surrounded by cliffs and rises 144 meters above sea level.

The name derives from the Aramaic 'susa' (horse), and one theory holds it comes from the shape of the mountain, which resembles a horse.

Excavations at the site are ongoing.
