The Ancient Synagogue at Ein Keshatot
There was a Jewish settlement here during the Mishnah and Talmud periods.
An earthquake brought down the synagogue and the village houses.
The villagers made their living from bleaching flax, evident from the magnificent synagogue, as the village was very wealthy.
Before the Six-Day War a Syrian village named Umm el-Kanatir stood here.
There is a visitor center on site, where a short film is screened telling the story of the place and its restoration.
From the visitor center a path leads to the spring called Umm el-Kanatir, named for the impressive arches built over the spring in the Roman period.
The synagogue was restored using a unique and innovative technology.
The original stones that remained on site since the earthquake were used in the construction.
The synagogue structure is very impressive.
Its Torah ark is the best preserved and most magnificent found in the country to date.
